Gun attack on soccer field in Mexico, 11 dead!

A tragedy has struck Mexico after gunmen opened fire on a soccer field in Salamanca on Sunday, killing at least 11 people and wounding 12 others, authorities said.

The mayor, Cesar Prieto, said in a statement posted on social media that the gunmen arrived at the end of a soccer match.

Ten people died at the scene and another died later in hospital. The mayor said a woman and a minor were among the injured.

Prieto said the attack was part of a "crime wave" in the city and called on President Claudia Sheinbaum for help in controlling the violence.

The Guanajuato prosecutor's office said it is investigating the incident and is cooperating with federal authorities to strengthen security in the area.

Guanajuato had the highest number of murders in Mexico last year. A local gang, the Santa Rosa de Lima, has been at odds with the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

“Unfortunately, there are criminal groups trying to subdue the authorities, something they will not achieve,” said the mayor.

Overall, Mexico's government says the country's homicide rate for 2025 was the lowest since 2016, at 17.5 murders per 100,000 residents, although analysts warned that these figures may not fully reflect the violence in the country.
