Double Spies and Mossad False Steps: The Great Deception Israel Suffered by Hamas

People who work for two masters and are useful to deceive are defined in espionage jargon with the nickname "caviar". Hamas, the Palestinian militant organization, appears to have made these one of its best weapons. Through them, Hamas managed to deceive the enemy and hide its true intentions. It is likely that, tactically, these obscure figures participated in a well-studied plan.

Palestinian sources revealed to the Reuters agency that it was the "Ezzedine al Qassam" brigades that managed to deceive the enemy. Even if something leaked, Egypt, which always has "its eyes" on Gaza, had warned Jerusalem of "something big" to come, but was surprised by the lack of attention from the Netanyahu government. According to the same sources, a major investigation is underway to understand whether it was the skill of Hamas or a misstep by Mossad, Shin Bet and Aman, Jerusalem's military intelligence.

The first move Hamas made was to send a message of calm: “We are not interested in a new conflict. We are committed to the management of Gaza. We are negotiating to increase the number of Palestinian workers working in the Jewish state." This slogan was said and re-said on many levels, both in the Gaza Strip and outside it.

However, it is learned that Hamas had contacts in April with the "Pasdaran", the Iranian guard in Lebanon. These were interpreted as preparations for small actions, attacks that Israel is used to containing and tolerating. The Wall Street Journal reveals that plans had since been hatched for a massive offensive. Israel's government, however, appears wary at the official level of accusing the ayatollahs of direct involvement. In the middle seems to be the US position: the Iranians are collaborators, but there is no evidence of their participation in this operation. However, Israel considers that there is time for concrete accusations. The attention is now on the situation on the ground.

What is known is that Hamas brigades conduct exercises in the field as there is evidence documented by videos published on the Internet. They used boats to go to the beaches, militants with airplanes and fire drills. Everything was clear. It is impossible that the Shin Bet did not notice this. Perhaps the analysis office will have thought of routine and propaganda activities. What did their sources on the ground say? Did they confirm it? It's possible.

Shortly after its creation, Hamas formed Al Majd, its initial counter-espionage cell. The current leader Yahya Sinwar was part of it in the 1980s. In 2007 it took a different name and form. The cell began to pursue traitors, studied its opponent and equipped itself with technological tools with the help of the Iranians. At this point double agents were used to pass accurate data but also misinformation.

The trick is to sacrifice something or someone in order not to arouse suspicion among the Israelites. In one case, the Hamas secret service used an informant's cell phone to listen to conversations with Israeli 007s. On another occasion he used a hostage to learn details about the "safe houses", modus operandi and Shin Bet connections. There was also an episode where a Hamas spy killed his intelligence contact, a gesture to atone for his guilt.

An endless spy game. With losses, twists, infiltrations. In September, it was revealed how an operative of the Hamas Brigades was arrested in Lebanon, but previously active in Turkey. He was a member of the technical department but spied on his comrades in Gaza and abroad, giving Mossad details used to eliminate explosives expert Hamza Shahi in the Gaza Strip in 2021. /Corriere della Sera
