Russia continues to carry out airstrikes against the capital of Ukraine and other cities. But Ukrainian officials say the skies are protected by systems sent to Ukraine by its allies. As Voice of America correspondent Anna Kosstutschenko reports, the one that stands out the most is the American Avenger air defense system.
The Ukrainian soldier nicknamed Festool used to work in furniture production in Kiev. It already operates the US Avenger anti-aircraft missile system.
"We have already shot down Shaheed drones and missiles," he says.
Along with other fellow fighters, he was sent in February 2023 abroad to train in the use of the Avenger air defense system.
Normally, he says, this kind of training takes several months, but he was given just two weeks. One of the reasons for such accelerated preparation is that the attacks of the Russian forces are very intense.
In March 2023, the first Avenger system was fielded in Ukraine. Military spokesman Vitaly Georgiev says these systems are protecting civilian and military facilities.
"The Russians attack not only military facilities, but also vital infrastructure and the civilian population. So almost all air defense systems are used to protect these facilities and civilian buildings as well," says Mr. Georgiev.
Before Russia attacked Ukraine, Avenger systems had never been used against drones, Festooli says. For this reason, he and his fellow fighters are constantly in contact with American colleagues to share this new experience and the new practical use of the Avenger system.
"They have not had a situation like this with drones like ours. Normally, these Stinger missiles are used to hit enemy planes and helicopters," says Festooli.
The preparation of this military system is done in just 15 minutes from the moment the alarm sounds.
It only takes two people to operate this system. / VOA
