Tensions between the United States of America, Russia and China have increased in recent weeks, and the world is once again experiencing a fear it has not felt for a long time: that of a nuclear war.

A single button pressed by one of the superpowers could change the planet forever, which would bring devastating consequences not only instantly, but their effects would be felt many years later.

A recent study conducted by the journal "Nature Food" explained that the release of atomic bombs by Moscow and Washington would cause an unprecedented famine, due to interruptions in the food supply, and two-thirds of humanity could die from hunger.

"The data tell us one thing: we have to prevent a nuclear war from happening. If nuclear weapons exist, they can be used, and the world has come close to nuclear war several times. Banning nuclear weapons is the only long-term solution," climate scientist Alan Robock, co-author of the study, said in a statement.

Professor of food science at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University and director of a government-affiliated food safety program, William Chen, said "the psychological impact may be greater than the harm itself."

Thus, to prepare for further global instability, he added, countries must move away from traditional agriculture and diversify their food sources. Mushroom cultivation, indoor farming and production of insect protein or microalgae-based feed may be suitable alternatives. According to studies, Argentina and Australia have the best hope that their society will survive for a decade if a nuclear war breaks out.

Robock explained to The Times that the reason these countries have an advantage is because they already grow more resistant crops, such as wheat, in large quantities. Being from countries farthest from the Northern Hemisphere, from the center of Europe and from the major powers, gives Argentina and Australia additional protection, because the blast wave from nuclear bombs would not reach these territories. In this way, the Argentinians and Australians could stay fed for much longer.
