Doomsday Glacier

A group of climate scientists and engineers have proposed an unusual solution to slow the melting of the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica, otherwise known as the "Doomsday Glacier."

According to recent studies, this glacier is melting at a faster rate than predicted, posing a serious risk to sea level rise on a global scale.

Thwaites contributes about 4% of annual sea level rise and, if it were to collapse completely, could cause a rise of up to 65 centimeters, putting millions of coastal residents at risk. To curb this process, the construction of a flexible underwater barrier, about 152 meters high and 80 kilometers long, anchored to the seabed, is proposed. The aim is to block the penetration of warm ocean waters that accelerate the melting of the ice, writes AS.

The project envisages a three-year research phase to test materials and prototypes, as well as detailed measurements inside the glacier to better understand the interaction between the ocean and its base. Scientists emphasize that this solution will not stop climate change, but it could buy precious time to limit its consequences.
