NATO chief Mark Rutte called on Western countries on Friday to provide "strong" security guarantees for Ukraine, so that Russia respects any possible peace agreement and "never dares" to invade Ukraine again.

Mark Rutte made this statement during a visit to Kiev, where he was received by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The issue of possible security guarantees for Ukraine has been the main focus of recent US-led diplomatic efforts to reach a peace deal to end the conflict, which has entered its fourth year.

"Strong security guarantees will be essential and that is why we are currently working to define them," said Mark Rutte.

US President Donald Trump, who hosted a meeting with European leaders including Rutte and Zelensky on Monday, said Russia had agreed to some of the Western security guarantees for Kiev.

However, Moscow has raised doubts about such an agreement. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that discussing security guarantees without Russia's involvement is "a utopia, a dead end."

During a visit to Kiev, during which an air raid siren was heard in the city, Rutte said security guarantees were necessary to ensure that "Russia will respect every agreement and never, ever again try to occupy even one square kilometer of Ukraine."

Zelensky, on the other hand, said that "guarantees consist of what partners can offer Ukraine, but also of what the Ukrainian army should be like" after the war ends.
