The United States launched a new airstrike in the Pacific on Monday against a speedboat suspected of belonging to drug traffickers, killing two people, the US Joint Command responsible for South America (SOUTHCOM) announced, as part of a campaign that has been ongoing since September 2025.
The new attack, reported via X, brings to at least 130 the number of deaths and at least 38 ships destroyed since September, when the US began a bombing campaign against ships that Washington says belong to drug traffickers. It is the third known airstrike of its kind since the beginning of the year.
The particularly unusual element of yesterday's bombing is that the US military spoke of a "survivor", adding that it "immediately" notified the Coast Guard to conduct a "search and rescue" operation for the sailor.
