A bipartisan deal has been reached in the US Senate to fund the federal government through January 30 and end the government shutdown, Reuters reports.

In a procedural vote, senators approved a bill proposed by the House of Representatives, which would be amended to fund the government through January 30 and would include a package of three appropriations bills for the entire year.

The bipartisan agreement reached in the U.S. Senate also includes a measure that Democrats were particularly interested in: the rehiring of federal employees laid off during the shutdown.

But the measure, which resulted from days of negotiations between a handful of Democratic and Republican senators, leaves out the health care subsidies that Democrats had been demanding for weeks. Most Democratic senators rejected it, as did many of their party's lawmakers in the House of Representatives, which will have to vote to approve it before the government can reopen.

Meanwhile, the agreement will also return air traffic, which was at risk of being paralyzed in the coming hours, to normal.

"We are nearing the end of the shutdown," commented President Donald Trump.

The bill received the 60 votes needed to advance in the Senate, with almost all Republicans voting in favor along with eight Democrats.

The compromise bill will now have to be approved by the House of Representatives and signed by Donald Trump, which could take days. After advancing the legislation, the Senate adjourned until Monday morning, putting a hold on further voting on the issue.
