Russia on Tuesday declared Radio Free Europe (REL) an "undesirable organization", according to a Ministry of Justice register.

In the last update, it was announced that Radio Free Europe has been declared undesirable since February 2, while the decision was made public on February 20.

According to the register, REL is the 142nd entity to be included in the list.

The law on "undesirable organizations" was passed in 2015, and is supported by the Kremlin, to regulate non-governmental organizations that accept funds from abroad.

This law affects organizations whose activities, according to the Russian authorities, pose a threat to the foundations of the state's constitutional structure, security, and defense.

Inclusion on the list means that an organization cannot operate in Russia, and Russian citizens are prohibited from cooperating with it, or risk prosecution.
