Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke in today's podcast about the government's new decisions to establish the Transparency Board and reduce the excise tax on oil by 20 percent, emphasizing that the priority is the protection of pensioners.
In parallel, Rama announced the introduction of a new public factor into the market, which aims to influence the creation of a price balance and increase transparency in the oil market in Albania.
According to him, this intervention will also aim to combat oil evasion and smuggling, including abuses of the transit regime.
"It is a topic that requires attention and has our constant attention, hour after hour, and as we have said, we have taken concrete steps, a task force has been set up in the Ministry of Economy and Finance in order to increase control and identify any possible abuse in the market. No abuses have been noticed, monitoring continues, and since the price has had another jump, the decision has been made to enter the transparency board regime, which will ensure that there will be no beneficiaries or profiteers, as they say on the other side of the mountains, who will want to exploit the crisis to put more money in their pockets.
At the same time, another decision has been made to intervene with a temporary measure, which other countries are also doing in the excise tax on oil, by reducing it by about 20%, in order to ease, so to speak, the burden on vehicle users. But in the meantime, I want to say very, very clearly, that at the end of the day, what interests us first is to protect pensioners, which means that in this case, the increased level of benefit that will come to the state coffers from the price increase, whatever it is, after the reduction in excise tax, will go only to protect pensioners, only to support pensioners", said Rama.
"At the same time, we are moving quickly on the one hand on the draft law on strategic reserves, which is in public consultation. It is a process that began before this new crisis began, which is related to the loss of balance in the world on a global scale, which is provoking crisis after crisis. And on the other hand, in parallel, we are preparing to introduce a public factor into the market, a new force, which will have the burden, together with a series of other measures, to make a significant intervention in establishing, not only a balance in terms of price in the oil market, but also a completely new level in terms of transparency of that market, in terms of oil movements in the Republic of Albania and in terms of a phenomenon that is still unexploited in this regard, which is oil evasion and smuggling, also taking advantage of the transit regime and doing tricks that have come to an end.
"We will intervene and we strongly believe that in a period not too distant, we will show with facts that the intervention has been an intervention for the good of society, for the good of vehicle users and consumers of diesel, but above all, for the good of all those who do not pollute and do not owe it to those who pollute, by driving diesel cars that in the meantime pay a consequence, which we want to put an end to," the prime minister continued.
