The interior ministers of the European Union consult on Tuesday (05.12.) regarding the consequences of the war in the Middle East for the security situation in Europe. The EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Ylva Johannson, has warned about the risk of assassinations in Europe during the holiday period - "There is a high risk of terrorist assassinations", she said in Brussels within the framework of the meeting of the Ministers of the Interior.

Johansson attributed this risk to the great "polarization" that the war between Israel and the terrorist organization Hamas has caused. She announced an additional 30 million euros for the protection of certain places such as churches, synagogues and mosques.

The Minister of the Interior of Germany, Nancy Faeser, and the Constitutional Protection Authority warn of the risk of assassinations. Just last weekend, an Islamist killed a German-Filipino tourist in Paris. The bomber justified this with the violence against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Before the migration deal

Among other things, EU interior ministers hold consultations on the subject of migration and common asylum policy. On Wednesday, the mediators of the member states and the European Parliament want to reach an agreement on the issue of asylum, one of the toughest disputes in the EU for years. Among other things, accelerated asylum procedures are planned at the external borders of the EU. The German government has sought to exempt women and children from this procedure, but has not been successful with this procedure so far.

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Germany, Faeser, spoke optimistically about the asylum reform in the EU. "I am very confident that this will be achieved. Both the EU Council and the European Parliament are getting closer to each other. I myself have been working hard, as you know, for two years on this," Faeser said on Tuesday. We will do everything to reach a compromise. Currently, the Council of Ministers of the EU, the European Parliament and the European Commission are in final negotiations for the asylum reform.

"I want to emphasize how important this is. Effective protection of the EU's external borders can only be achieved with a common European asylum system," Faeser emphasized.
Even the Spanish Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who leads the negotiations on behalf of the member countries, expressed "with a kind of optimism" that an agreement is expected to be reached on Wednesday. The European Parliament overwhelmingly calls for milder reform of the asylum system, emphasizing humanitarian standards. /DW
