On the two-year anniversary of the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine, Chancellor Scholz has called for a return to a policy of intimidation. Germany and Europe must do more to protect themselves effectively, he said.

On the second anniversary of the beginning of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for greater efforts by Europe and Germany for a more effective defense. Russia violates "every day" the basic principle that borders cannot be changed by force, the German chancellor said in his weekly video message. "Russia does not only attack Ukraine with this, but destroys the order of peace in Europe". The chancellor emphasized that it is precisely for this reason that Ukraine is supported, "even as long as necessary". "And we, Germany and Europe, do more , we must do more in order to protect ourselves effectively".

"...so that no one dares to attack us"

On the second anniversary of the Russian attack on Ukraine, Scholz called for a return to a policy of intimidation. Words like "intimidation" and "defense capability" are "unusual words for some to come out of the mouth of a federal chancellor," Scholz pointed out. They mean an important task. "Together with our allies we must be so strong that no one dares to attack us. That's how we take care of our security. And that's how we protect peace in Europe."

For the German chancellor, the best guarantee for this remains NATO, and "this on both sides of the Atlantic", stressed Scholz. Germany is strengthening the Bundeswehr and the defense of Europe. "This is our contribution to a strong NATO". With this, the German chancellor indirectly referred to the debate that ex-president Trump instigated about the expenses of NATO countries. Countries that don't pay the right quotas I won't protect, Trump said at an election event.

Chancellor Scholz emphasized that this year, for the first time in two decades, Germany invests 2% of its gross domestic product for defense, and "it will remain so in the coming years and decades." At the same time, Scholz admitted, that the German army has been ignored for too long. "Since the change of eras this has come to an end," Scholz said, referring to his "change of eras" concept used in a speech to the Bundestag on February 27, 2022, after the start of Russian aggression. Scholz in that speech announced a special fund of 100 billion euros for the Bundeswehr.
