A mysterious wave of pneumonia has hit China in recent weeks, from which come disturbing images reminiscent of the period of the coronavirus pandemic, when not much was known about it.

Thousands of people have been filmed queuing at hospitals to get medical help, as authorities say there is nothing to worry about.

Official Beijing blames the flu and other seasonal viruses for the wave of people affected by this pneumonia, and insists that it is not a question of any new infection or disease.

Scenes of parents and children queuing at China's biggest hospitals have sparked alarm in the rest of the world.

The situation has forced the World Health Organization to officially request information from the Chinese authorities about the conclusions they have reached so far.

But the Chinese health ministry insists that it is only about flu and other known viruses and categorically rules out a new pathogen. Authorities say they are taking measures to open as many clinics as possible, while they have called for the elderly and children to be vaccinated against the flu.
