A 4-year-old American girl held by Hamas in Gaza was freed on Saturday, President Joe Biden said, as the militant group announced it had handed over 13 Israeli hostages, three Thais and a Russian national on the third day of a ceasefire with Israel.

The release of some of the hostages taken when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on October 7 was expected to be followed by Israel's release of another 39 Palestinian prisoners, as it did in the previous days of the ceasefire.

President Biden said he hopes the pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas will continue as long as the release of hostages continues. He said he hopes more Americans will be freed by Hamas, although he said there is no concrete indication.

President Biden said 4-year-old Abigail Edan witnessed the killing of her parents by Hamas militants during the October 7 attack in Israel and has been held hostage since that day.

"It's unimaginable what she went through," President Biden said during a press conference.

The four-day ceasefire marked the first cessation of hostilities in seven weeks since Hamas killed 1,200 people in Israel and took about 240 hostages in Gaza.

In response, Israel has vowed to destroy the Hamas organization that runs Gaza by bombing the territory and launching a ground offensive in its northern part. Some 14,800 Palestinians have been killed, health authorities in Gaza say, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with security forces inside the Gaza Strip on Saturday and signaled that the military campaign continues.

"Nothing will stop us, and we are convinced that we have the strength, power, will and determination to achieve all the objectives of the war, and we will," he said.

Netanyahu spoke later Sunday with President Biden.
