A story of survival and courage comes from the southwest coast of Western Australia, where a 13-year-old boy managed to save his mother and two younger brothers after swimming for about four hours in the open sea, in dangerous conditions and with fading light.

The family was vacationing in Quindalup, about 200 kilometers south of Perth, when strong winds blew their inflatable paddleboards and kayak far from the shore in Geographe Bay on Friday afternoon. Within minutes, they found themselves in the middle of the sea, with no way to turn back.

The 13-year-old boy, identified by ABC as Austin Appelbee, decided to take action. He tried to kayak back to shore to call for help, but the kayak began to fill with water. With no other option, he jumped into the sea and began a long and grueling swim of about four kilometers.

"I was fighting strong waves and the approaching darkness," he told the national broadcaster. He initially swam in a life jacket, but after about two hours he took it off to move faster. Fear was present at every moment.

"I thought I saw something in the water and I was really scared, but I told myself I would make it," the teenager confessed.

To avoid giving up, he focused on the memories and the most beautiful things in his life.

"I was very tired, but I didn't realize how exhausted I was," he said.

After several hours, he finally touched the sand of the shore. Collapsed from exhaustion, he found the strength to get up and run about two kilometers to find a phone. His call to the emergency number 000 was decisive.

"I need helicopters, ships, planes. My family is at sea," he remembers telling authorities, remaining calm despite the shock.

Western Australian Police immediately launched a major search and rescue operation, involving water police, marine rescue volunteers and a rescue helicopter. At around 8:30 p.m., the helicopter located the 47-year-old mother, a 12-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl, clinging to a paddleboard, about 14 kilometers from the coast.

A volunteer boat managed to bring them safely to shore. Medical parameters were checked by St John WA teams and the family was taken to the Busselton Health Centre.

Authorities described the event as an "extraordinary rescue."

Police stressed that the 13-year-old's accurate description of the vehicles at sea was vital to the operation, while his courage and determination were credited as the main factors that saved the family's lives.

"This boy's actions are an extraordinary example of courage," authorities said, recalling that sea conditions can change in a matter of moments.
