Lord Peter Mandelson's involvement in the Epstein scandal may go beyond payments made by the paedophile financier, including one on behalf of Reinaldo Avila da Silva, the prominent Labour politician's partner in 2009, according to documents released by the US Department of Justice.

Police are now investigating reports that Mandelson, the former Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, passed sensitive government information to Epstein, including a warning about the EU's €500 billion bailout package aimed at saving the euro.

The politician is now being investigated for abuse of public office and financial misconduct, according to the BBC. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer is preparing to chair his weekly cabinet meeting with this development in focus, after the Prime Minister's Office declared that Mandelson should not be a member of the House of Lords.

The latter resigned from the Labour Party on Sunday evening. Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown condemned the alleged leak of a “highly sensitive government document” during the financial crisis, calling it “completely unacceptable”.

Starmer, according to the international press, also gave an ultimatum to his government secretary Cris Wormald to review all information regarding contacts between Mandelson and Epstein during his time as minister from 2008 to 2010.

In another exchange of messages, revealed by the Financial Times, Mandelson appears to suggest that Epstein ask the head of JPMorgan to "put pressure" on the British chancellor to reduce the tax on bankers' bonuses.
