Four Buddhist monks have been arrested in Thailand after a raid on a temple found pornographic material, sex toys, a list of escorts and other prohibited items.

The operation took place on January 27 at the Phrom Sunthon Temple in Chonburi province, following complaints from local residents about the use of weapons and drugs inside the temple.

Authorities said a search of the monks' rooms found money, a gun, a penis pump, a list of prostitutes' contacts and a DVD player with a pornographic disc inside.

Three of the monks also tested positive for methamphetamine, as well as one for penis enlargement.

Those arrested are Phra Supachai Jantawong (35 years old), Phra Wirat Mukdasanit (45 years old), Phra Thanapol Maison (59 years old) and the temple abbot, Phra Photisang Taebmuan.

The four monks have been expelled from their monastic orders and banned from continuing their religious activities.

According to authorities, the three monks suspected of using drugs will be referred to a rehabilitation program, while the abbot has been handed over to immigration authorities for further investigation and is expected to be deported.

One of the arrested is said to have used methamphetamine to relieve chronic pain related to diabetes and hypertension, a claim that is being investigated by the competent authorities.
