Russia proposes law to imprison "parasites" of society

Lawmakers in Russia's State Duma have found a way to combat depopulation, emigration and labor shortages by... imprisoning people.

A bill seeking criminal liability for "parasitism" has already been sent to the Federation Council.

The proposal targets Russians who "avoid engaging in work activities," with penalties ranging from up to a year of corrective labor to a year in prison.

In practice, it is a direct revival of the old Soviet article on parasitism. Back then, anyone who didn't work was sent to a penal colony.
