NASA will make a second attempt to launch its pioneering Artemis 1 rocket on Saturday afternoon after the US space agency said it had identified and fixed an engine problem that caused the initial launch attempt to be delayed five days ago.

Mission managers at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida canceled Monday's liftoff with 40 minutes left on the countdown clock when a sensor indicated that one of the four RS-25 engines on the main stage of the Space Launch System (SLS) mega rocket was not firing. was properly cooled.

A review revealed the problem was a faulty sensor, not a failure of the cooling system or the engine itself, and the launch team has said it will be ignored if it malfunctions again during refueling for Saturday's planned 2pm attempt: 17 EDT (7.17pm BST).

"We've convinced ourselves beyond a shadow of a doubt that we have good quality liquid hydrogen going through the engines," said John Honeycutt, Artemis program manager, at a pre-launch press conference.

The engines must match the -250C (-420F) temperature of the liquid hydrogen fuel at takeoff, otherwise they could be damaged and shut down during the eight-minute ascent to low Earth orbit, he said.
