Canada's newly elected Prime Minister, Mark Carney, in his first speech after his victory, took a strong stance against the United States, declaring that "America wants our land, our resources, our country - but that will never happen."
Speaking to enthusiastic supporters, Carney stressed that humility - one of the three values ??he has proclaimed as the foundation of his government - means working with all political parties, provinces and indigenous peoples. He said he aims to bring together workers, business and civil society, while warning that the government must prepare for the most difficult scenarios.
In a statement that brought the room to its feet, Carney accused the US of trying to “destroy Canada so they can own us.” He stressed that the traditional relationship of integration with the US is over and called this a “historic tragedy.”
"We have overcome the shock of American betrayal. Now, more than ever, we must look out for each other," Carney said, calling this moment a pivotal point in Canadian history.
He confirmed that he will meet with President Trump in the coming days to discuss the future of the two sovereign and independent nations, while adding that the Liberal government will deepen partnerships with European countries and other global allies.
"If the US no longer wants to lead the world, Canada will," he said to cheers from the audience.
Carney acknowledged that the challenges facing the country are great and that profound change can be unsettling, but he expressed confidence in the strength and unity of the nation. “Canada is not just a country, it is a federation. We are not always perfect, but we try to be fair.”
He concluded the speech with a message of hope and ambition, declaring that Canada will become an energy superpower and create strong jobs: “This is Canada. We decide what happens here.”
