The White House argued on Monday that Donald Trump wanted a "permanent" ceasefire in Ukraine and not just a temporary one.

US President Donald Trump has called for a permanent ceasefire in Ukraine after his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, announced a three-day pause in fighting in May.

The Kremlin said it expected Ukraine to take up the ceasefire between May 8-10 and warned it would respond to any "violations".

But Ukraine said Russia should have declared an immediate 30-day ceasefire if it "really wants peace".

The White House said Trump, who is pushing for a peace deal to be reached this week, wanted to see a "permanent ceasefire."

She also warned that the US president was becoming "increasingly frustrated" with both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky.

Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, was asked about Trump's meeting with Zelensky over the weekend, and she told reporters on Monday: "He thinks he's increasingly frustrated with the leaders of both countries. He wants to see a permanent ceasefire. I understand that Vladimir Putin this morning offered a temporary ceasefire."

"The president has made it clear that he wants to see a permanent ceasefire first to stop the killing, to stop the bloodshed, and while he remains optimistic that a deal can be reached, he is also being realistic and the two leaders need to sit down at the table to negotiate a way out of this situation...", the US official added.

Putin's ceasefire will include Russia's Victory Day on May 9, which marks the end of World War II.
