Colombian President Gustavo Petro said today he would be willing to "take up arms" to defend his country. The reaction comes after Donald Trump threatened military action against the Colombian government and allegations that Petro is involved in drug trafficking to the United States.
In a post on social media, Petro said he would not respond directly to Trump until he was sure the statements had been translated correctly, denying that he was elected illegally or that he is a drug trafficker.
He added that he had taken an oath not to touch a weapon, but added that for the sake of the homeland, he would be willing to do so.
Meanwhile, Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, used softer tones than her Colombian counterpart.
She stated that she does not consider a US intervention in her country possible, reiterating her opposition to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro.
She stressed that Mexico is open to cooperation against drug trafficking.
Sheinbaum emphasized that this cooperation does not mean submission or acceptance of foreign interference.
