Venezuela's ousted former president Nicolas Maduro has appeared in a New York courtroom after his capture Saturday during a U.S. military operation in Caracas. He faces charges of drug and arms trafficking and "narco-terrorism."

The hearing began with 92-year-old judge Alvin Hellerstein, who informed Maduro of the charges against him.

Maduro pleads not guilty in court

Maduro has pleaded not guilty to narco-terrorism charges in a US court, telling the judge in Spanish: "I am an honest man, I am still president of my country."

Cilia Flores, Maduro's wife, also pleaded not guilty to drug charges during the court hearing.

Maduro also told the American judge that he was "taken hostage."

Maduro has hired renowned criminal lawyer Barry Pollack, who has long represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, as his lawyer in the Manhattan criminal case where he is accused of narcoterrorism. Pollack filed a notice of taking legal defense for Maduro in the drug trafficking case in the Southern District of New York ahead of the hearing.

Next session on March 17th

The next hearing in the trial of Nicolás Maduro is scheduled for March 17, American media reports.

The judge has ordered Maduro to appear in court again.

Maduro's lawyer said his client is not seeking bail at this time.

However, he may make this request later, according to reports from several American media outlets.
