Matteo Messina Denaro, the biggest boss of Cosa Nostra, has been arrested after more than 30 years of being wanted. Denaro was arrested by the carabinieri at a private clinic in Palermo, where he had been admitted for treatment.

Who is Matteo Messina Denaro

He is a "playboy" who lived among women and luxury cars, always distinguished himself from others, but inexplicably, for 30 years he managed to escape the Italian authorities.

He is Matteo Messina Denaro, the man who is considered to be the "capo dei capi" of the Sicilian mafia and who was once on the list of the 10 most wanted people in the world, together with El Chapo and the successor of Osama Bin Laden. It is also known as Diabolik in Italy, after a character from the animated films.

The boss of bosses has also been accused of involvement in the murder of a pregnant woman, the suffocation and disappearance of a child with acid. In total, he is charged with 50 murders. According to reports in Italy, he once boasted to others: "I filled a cemetery alone".

As the son of an influential mafia boss in the Costa Nostra, Francesco Messina Denaro, Diabolik learned to use a pistol at the age of 14, and committed his first murder at the age of 18. Often dressed in Armani, one of his first victims was a hotel owner who objected to his relationship with the receptionist.

In 1993, after executing rival boss Vincenzo Milazzo, he strangled his pregnant girlfriend with his bare hands. Italian authorities also believe he was involved in the robbery and murder of 11-year-old Giuseppe di Matteo, whom he held hostage for two years in an attempt to stop his father from testifying in a trial against the mafia.

When the Italian state began cracking down on his organization in the early 1990s, Denaro became a devoted "soldier" in the fight against the authorities. He is also believed to have played a role in the murder of prosecutor Giovani Falcone, as he was the man monitoring his movements before his car was blown up in 1992. Along with the brutal killer Giovanni Brusca, he is believed to have assisted in the assassinations with a bomb in Florence, Milan and Rome, where dozens of people were killed.

Although on the run, Denaro retained authority within the mafia and after the arrests of Toto Riina's followers, Leoluca Bagarella and Bernardo Provenzano, assumed leadership of Cosa Nostra. When Provenzano was still free, he took Denaro under his patronage and called him nephew.

Although considered the "last of the Mohicans" of the "old school" mafia, Denaro is seen as the man who adapted one of the oldest criminal organizations in Italy to the modern world. First by uniting the divided clans around Trapani, where he comes from, and then by personally acting as a bridge between the mafia and the Colombian drug cartels.

In a way copying Pablo Escobar, Denaro is seen in Sicily as a hero of the people. "In the city, you only hear that the mafia finds you a job and the state takes it," Francesco Garofalo, a member of the anti-mafia group "Libera", told The Guardian. "There are people here who want to make him Mayor".

However, he cemented his place on the "throne" of the mafia only in 2017, after Bernardo Provenzano and Toto Riina had died. The Italian police set up a special structure for his capture, called "Catturandi".

Until today when he went into custody, efforts to find him have failed and according to the BBC, his personal fortune has reached over 3.5 billion dollars.
