US Vice President JD Vance has issued a strong warning to Denmark over Greenland, signaling that President Donald Trump is "willing to do whatever is necessary" to protect US interests in the Arctic.
His statements deepen an already tense divide between the United States and Denmark, another NATO ally, over this strategic island.
In an interview with Fox News, Vance criticized European security management in Greenland, specifically targeting Denmark.
He said: "Have the Europeans, have the Danes done a proper job of securing Greenland and making sure that it can continue to serve as a foundation for global security and missile defense - and the answer is, of course, no."
Vance accused Denmark of underinvesting in security and failing to adequately protect its territory. “We will make sure that we protect America’s interests,” he added. “And I think the president is willing to go to the lengths necessary to do that.”
Greenland has long been recognized for its strategic military and geopolitical importance, serving as a central option for missile defense and surveillance in the Arctic.
Tensions between the US and Denmark have increased over control and development of the island, raising questions about NATO cohesion in the region.
