Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has rejected the idea of ??a US military intervention in Greenland, calling it unacceptable and useless for anyone.
"I do not believe in the hypothesis that the US would launch a military action in Greenland, which I would not support" and "which would not serve anyone", said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, despite Trump having hinted that he is considering such an option.
According to her, the hypothesis of an intervention to take control of Greenland has been ruled out by both Rubio and Donald Trump himself.
"I believe that the Trump administration, with its very harsh methods, is highlighting the strategic importance of Greenland for its interests and security. It is an area where many foreign actors operate and I think the US message is that it will not accept excessive interference from external actors," she added.
Among other things, Meloni added that he often disagrees with Trump, emphasizing that international law must be defended: "There are many things I disagree with Trump on, for example, I believe that international law must be broadly defended. When I disagree, I tell him, I have no difficulty."
Meloni also stressed that he agreed with French President Emmanuel Macron, who recently urged Europe to engage with Moscow as efforts continued to end the war in Ukraine.
"I think Macron is right about this. I believe the time has come for Europe to talk to Russia too. At this stage of the negotiations, if Europe decides to talk to only one of the two sides, I fear that in the end, the contribution it will make will be limited," Meloni said at the annual New Year's conference.
The Italian Prime Minister added that the EU should appoint a special envoy who would deal directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, thus avoiding confusion.
The Italian Prime Minister underlined that her goal is to strengthen relations with European and Atlantic partners, seeing more "the lights than the shadows" of cooperation.
"The directions of our foreign policy are the European Union and the Atlantic Alliance, as President Mattarella recalled a few days ago. What does it mean to keep our distance from America? Maybe to leave NATO, to remove American military bases, to attack McDonalds? Let's talk about geopolitics, I look for the lights more than the shadows of Italy's relationship with its European and Atlantic partners," Meloni concluded.
Meloni's statement comes after the White House confirmed that President Donald Trump and his team are considering options to purchase Greenland and that using the US military is "always an option."
