Israel: Gaza City will be destroyed if Hamas does not surrender

Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has warned that Gaza City will be completely destroyed if Hamas refuses to disarm and release all hostages.

His statement comes after the Israeli cabinet approved plans for a major military offensive in Gaza City, despite strong opposition both domestically and internationally.

Meanwhile, Hamas has agreed to a proposal by Qatari and Egyptian mediators for a 60-day ceasefire, which Qatar says would include the release of half of the remaining hostages. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the proposal, stressing that it demands the release of all hostages and the end of the war on acceptable conditions for Israel.

According to Israeli authorities, of the remaining 50 hostages, it is believed that only 20 are still alive after nearly two years of war.

Netanyahu stated that he has ordered the resumption of negotiations and the approval of the IDF's plans to take control of Gaza City and defeat Hamas.

"Two objectives that go hand in hand: the destruction of Hamas and the release of all hostages," Netanyahu said from the military headquarters near Gaza.

In a post on social networks, Minister Katz emphasized: "Soon, the gates of hell will open over the heads of Hamas' murderers and rapists in Gaza – until they accept Israel's conditions for ending the war: the release of all hostages and complete disarmament."

"If they do not accept, Gaza, the capital of Hamas, will be returned to Rafah and Beit Hanou," he added, referring to cities that have been almost completely destroyed during Israeli military operations.

Israeli forces have warned humanitarian organizations and health officials to prepare for the evacuation of about 1 million residents of Gaza City to the south, before the start of the ground offensive.

Gaza's Hamas-led health ministry has opposed the plan, saying any attempt to undermine the existing health system is unacceptable.

The UN has raised the alarm about the increase in civilian casualties and mass destruction in Gaza City, while humanitarian organizations have stated that they will stand by to help civilians who cannot or do not want to leave.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating significantly. The International Food Security Organization (IPC) has warned that the worst-case scenario of general hunger is already taking place in Palestinian territory.

Recall that Israel launched the military offensive in Gaza after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, where about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. Since then, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, over 62,000 people have been killed - figures which are also used by the UN as a reliable source for victim statistics.
