The Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Unal Ustel, criticized a trilateral summit between Israel, Greece and Cyprus, warning that new military cooperation risks escalating tensions in the eastern Mediterranean.
In a written statement regarding the summit held in Jerusalem on Monday, Ustel said the meeting signals a move toward confrontation instead of peace, stability and cooperation in the region.
"The TRNC is closely following the summit held by Israel, Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration, as well as reports of plans to create a joint military force," he said.
Ustel said that proposals for a rapid intervention force of 2,500 troops, which he said were presented as a deterrent against Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots, posed a new and dangerous threat to peace in the eastern Mediterranean.
Israel "seeks to bring instability"
"Israel, which tramples on humanitarian values with its aggressive policies in the Middle East, is now seeking to bring this instability to the eastern Mediterranean," Ustel said.
"Efforts to transform the region from a zone of peace into an arena of conflict threaten not only the island of Cyprus, but the entire Mediterranean basin," he added.
He described the involvement of Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration in what he called a dangerous game as a historical miscalculation.
Ustel also accused the Greek Cypriot leadership of presenting itself internationally as supporting a solution, while at the same time pursuing military alliances directed against Turkey.
"This hypocritical approach clearly shows how disconnected they are from reality on the island," he said.
The TRNC Prime Minister said that such actions undermine the basis for negotiations and make any possible compromise impossible.
“The revival of an aggressive mindset”
Marking the anniversary of the events known as “Bloody Christmas,” which referred to attacks on Turkish Cypriots in 1963, Ustel said it was unacceptable for the Greek Cypriot leadership to revive an aggressive mentality through current military plans instead of learning from history.
"The mentality that plunged the Republic of Cyprus into bloodshed in 1963 is the same mentality that today seeks to create an anti-Turkish military force in the Eastern Mediterranean," he said, referring to the Cypriot state that existed before the proclamation of the TRNC in 1983.
"It is impossible to develop a healthy negotiation process with such an understanding," he added.
"TRNC and Turkey, inseparable!"
Ustel stressed that the TRNC and Turkey are inseparable, warning that any military plan, pipeline project or political alliance that ignores the rights of Turkey and Turkish Cypriots or seeks to exclude them from the Eastern Mediterranean is doomed from the start.
Cyprus has remained divided between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for decades, despite repeated efforts by the United Nations to reach a comprehensive solution.
Violence in the early 1960s forced Turkish Cypriots to retreat to enclaves for their safety.
A 1974 Greek Cypriot coup aimed at uniting the island with Greece prompted a military intervention by Turkey. The TRNC was subsequently established in 1983.
Peace efforts have continued, including a failed round of talks in Switzerland in 2017 under the auspices of the guarantor powers of Turkey, Greece and the United Kingdom.
Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004, the same year that Greek Cypriots rejected a UN-backed reunification plan in a referendum.
Erdogan on the trilateral Greece, Cyprus and Israel: A tin can noise!
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his dissatisfaction with the recent meeting of Greece, Cyprus and Israel, saying that "agreements can be made, but none of them oblige us, they do not change our policy."
He stated that "the policies promoted by these countries will not change our position, and the actions of those who have the blood of our 70,000 Palestinian brothers on their hands are no different from the sound of a tin can."
"Whether it is the Eastern Mediterranean, the Aegean or anywhere else, we do not violate the rights of (others), nor do we allow our rights to be violated. We will not allow the rights of Turkish Cypriots to be violated and violated," he added.
