North Korea on Thursday released new images of what it said was its first nuclear-powered submarine, a large-scale combat vehicle comparable to some of the United States Navy's attack submarines.

Photos broadcast by state media show leader Kim Jong Un inspecting the submarine at a closed construction site, suggesting it has not yet been launched.

According to Pyongyang, the submarine weighs about 8,700 tons and represents an important step in the country's new defense strategy, which Kim describes as based on "the strongest offensive power." He called South Korea's plan to develop nuclear submarines an "aggressive act" that, he said, threatens North Korea's security.

Experts point out that nuclear-powered submarines have great advantages, as they can stay underwater for very long periods, practically for years, are faster and more difficult to detect. However, analysts estimate that North Korea's naval fleet still remains inferior to South Korea's, despite this development.

The footage has also sparked political speculation, as Kim Jong Un was seen accompanied by his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, fueling rumours that she could be groomed as the next successor.
