The European Union has strongly condemned travel restrictions imposed by the United States on some European citizens and officials, calling them unacceptable among allies and strategic partners.

"Such measures are unacceptable among allies, partners and friends," the EU stressed in its official response, underlining that these actions contradict shared democratic values.

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, stated that the European Union firmly defends freedom of expression, fair digital rules and its regulatory sovereignty, emphasizing that these principles are essential for the functioning of the EU.

The European Commission also reacted through a statement, condemning the decision of US authorities to impose travel restrictions on five European citizens, including former European Commissioner Thierry Breton.

"The European Commission strongly condemns the United States' decision to impose travel restrictions on five European citizens. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right in Europe and a core value shared with the United States in the democratic world," the statement said.

The EU's response comes at a time of heightened tensions over digital space regulation and regulatory powers, highlighting the differences between the two traditional transatlantic partners.
