Former head of Mossad: Israel will pay a heavy price
Yossi Cohen

Yossi Cohen, the former head of Israel's Foreign Intelligence Service (Mossad), said that Israel will need five years after the war to recover.

The Israel Broadcasting Corporation (KAN) quoted Cohen as saying that "Israel will have to pay a heavy price to return the hostages taken by the Palestinian resistance movement from the Gaza Strip."

At the end of December last year, Cohen said that the Gaza Strip had been specifically preparing for this war over the past decades and in a way that is not usual.

He admitted that the Palestinian resistance outnumbered the Israeli army, thanks to the tunnels in the Gaza Strip, which form an underground city with deep and long hiding places. He added that "logistical preparations have been made that enable a much larger underground life than we thought".

When it comes to northern Israel, he said we must continue to give a political solution a chance and avoid opening a second front when Hezbollah is ready for war. Cohen believes that the Israeli military is not ready to deal with two war zones at the same time.

The Palestinian resistance, led by Hamas, launched Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, which involved a ground, sea and air assault and the infiltration of resistance members into several Israeli military areas and settler settlements around Gaza. The operation came in response to Israeli attacks on holy sites and Palestinians.

In retaliation, since October 7 last year, the Israeli military has waged a devastating war against Gaza that, according to the Palestinian Authority, has left 27,238 dead and 66,452 wounded, mostly women and children, by Saturday. The United Nations says the war has caused massive destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
