Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been found guilty for the second time in as many years in what is considered one of the world's biggest financial scandals.
The court found him guilty of abuse of power and money laundering, dealing a serious blow to the 72-year-old, who has been in prison since 2022.
Najib Razak is accused of stealing about $570 million from the state investment fund, known as 1MDB. The fund was created to help the country's development, but investigators found that billions of dollars ended up in the pockets of politicians and other powerful people.
The judge found him guilty of four counts of abuse of office and 21 counts of money laundering. The decision on the new sentence is expected to be given soon, while he is currently serving another 6-year prison sentence.
During the trial, the former prime minister defended himself by saying that the money he had in his private account was a "gift" from the king of Saudi Arabia.
However, the court did not believe this version, describing it as an attempt to hide the theft.
The 1MDB scandal made headlines around the world after it was revealed that stolen money was used to buy luxury properties, yachts, and even finance Hollywood blockbusters. Investigators estimate that a total of $4.5 billion has disappeared from the fund.
The decision was met with widespread backlash. Former MP Tony Pua told the BBC that the sentence sends a clear message to all leaders.
The former prime minister's wife, Rosmah Mansor, was also previously sentenced to 10 years in prison for bribery, but is currently free on bail pending the outcome of her appeal.
