Algeria inaugurated a giant mosque on the Mediterranean coast on Sunday after years of political turmoil transformed the project from a state-sponsored symbol of power and religion to one of delays and cost overruns.

There is also a large bookstore in the Great Mosque of Algiers, where the minaret is 265 meters high, making it the tallest in the world.

The prayer space of the third largest mosque in the world and the largest outside Islam's holiest cities, covers 20,000 square meters and the place of worship can accommodate 120,000 worshippers.

Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune was the one who opened this mosque on Sunday in Algiers.

But in the meantime, this mosque was open to foreign tourists and local visitors to Algeria for about five years.

Thus, the mosque officially opens on the eve of the month of Ramadan, which begins in a few weeks, in March.

Besides its size, the mosque is best known for the delays and controversies that have characterized its seven years of construction, including the choice of a site that experts have warned is seismically dangerous.

But the state denied this in a statement on Sunday published on the website of the state news agency APS.

Official data shows that the value of the project is 898 million dollars.

The mosque was originally a project of former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who designed it to be the largest in Africa.

He wanted it to be his legacy and named it the "Abdelaziz Bouteflika Mosque" similar to the "Hassan II" Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco.

But the protests that swept Algeria in 2019 and led Bouteflika to resign after 20 years in power prevented him from carrying out his plans to name the mosque after him and open it in February 2019 as planned.
