Financier and member of the Rothschild banking family, Lord Jacob Rothschild, has died aged 87, his family said.

Rothschild began his career at the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons, in 1963, before founding the then J Rothschild Assurance Group, now St James's Place, with Mark Weinberg in 1980, the Independent reported.

He also founded Windmill Hill Asset Management, which manages the family's philanthropic portfolio. During his career, he also served as vice president of the then "BSkiB" television, as well as chairman of the Board of the National Gallery.
