Just as it happened with the Gulf of Mexico after Donald Trump renamed it "Gulf of America," Google has updated its Maps app, renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America," in compliance with the US president's executive order.

However, the change only applies to the United States. Users opening Google Maps from Canada will continue to see the old name, "Lake Ontario."

Google explained in a statement that it followed the practice of using the official name defined by the US Geographic Names Information System.

"Users using Maps in the United States will see 'Lake America,' those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario,' while users outside the United States and Canada will see both designations," the technology giant said.

But Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul of New York, which shares a long border with Canada, declared that "New York will no longer call it that," while Phil Scott, the Republican governor of neighboring Vermont, called Trump's decision "petty and disappointing" on social media.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a large sign on the lakefront that read "Lake Ontario: Now and Always," in both English and French. "President Trump can call it whatever he wants, but I can tell you the rest of the world will always call it Lake Ontario," Ford said.
