Former PM believes Northern Ireland will leave the UK in the long term - but remains against Scottish independence

Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown believes that Irish unification is inevitable in the long term and that Northern Ireland will eventually leave the United Kingdom.

In an interview with The Guardian, Brown stated that he expects Ireland to be united in the future, although he stressed that this will be a long process and must be achieved through the agreement and will of the parties.

"I think Ireland will unite," said the former British prime minister, who was directly involved in British politics during a key period of the peace process in Northern Ireland.

His statement takes on particular weight due to the debate that has been going on for years over the constitutional future of Northern Ireland and the possibility of holding a referendum on unification with the Republic of Ireland.

Brown made a strong distinction between Northern Ireland and his homeland, Scotland.

While he envisions a united Ireland, he continues to strongly oppose Scottish independence from the United Kingdom.

According to him, Scotland's geographical, economic and cultural ties with the rest of Britain are very strong and the best path is to strengthen cooperation and not division.

Brown's comments also come at a delicate moment for Northern Ireland. Just a day earlier, a court ruling regarding Orange Order marches in Portadown raised renewed concerns about sectarian tensions between unionist and nationalist communities.

The issue of Irish unity remains one of the most sensitive political topics in the United Kingdom. The Good Friday Agreement provides for the possibility of changing the constitutional status of Northern Ireland if a majority of the population supports such a change.

For Brown, however, the long-term direction seems clear: Northern Ireland will one day leave the United Kingdom and the island will be united.
