Boris Johnson's final speech: The rules were changed in the middle of the
Boris Johnson

'The rules were changed in the middle of the game' - Boris Johnson said today in his last speech as Prime Minister, from Downing Street.

He told the nation that "the baton will be passed" to Liz Truss as the Tory leadership "suddenly turned out to be a relay race".

Johnson lamented the way in which he had been forced out as he accused Tory MPs who ousted him of "changing the rules halfway through".

"This is the people. Thank you all for coming out so early this morning. In just a few hours I will be at Balmoral to see Her Majesty the Queen and the torch will finally be passed to a new Tory leader. The baton will surrender in what suddenly turned out to be a relay race, they changed the rules halfway through, but it doesn't bother me now."

Johnson pledged his "robust support" for the new Truss government and urged the Conservative Party to rally behind it.

Johnson resigned in July and remained in office until a successor was chosen.

FULL SPEECH:

Well - that's it, folks. Thank you all for coming out so early this morning.

In just a few hours I will be at Balmoral to see Her Majesty the Queen and the torch will finally be passed to a new Tory leader.

The baton will be passed in what unexpectedly turns out to be a relay race.

They changed the rules halfway through, but it doesn't matter now.

And through that curved black door, a new prime minister will soon go to meet a fantastic group of public servants - the people who finished Brexit, the people who delivered the fastest vaccine in Europe and will never forget the 70 per cent of the entire population received a dose within six months faster than any comparable country.

This is the Government for you. The people who organized those early arms deliveries to the heroic Ukrainian armed forces and actions that may very well have helped change the course of Europe's biggest war for 80 years.

Because of the speed and urgency of what you did, everyone involved in this government, to get this economy moving again from July of last year, with all the opposition, all the naysayers, we have and will continue to have that economic strength to give. people the money they need to overcome this energy crisis that has been caused by Putin's savage war.

And I know that Liz Truss, and this compassionate Tory government, will do everything we can to get people through this crisis, and this country will endure it, and we will win.

And if Putin thinks he can succeed by blackmailing or bullying the British people, then he is completely deluded.

And the reason we will have those funds now and in the future is because we conservatives understand the vital symmetry between government action and free market capitalist private sector enterprises.

We're delivering on those big manifesto commitments - making the streets safer, crime down 38 per cent in the last three years, 13,790 more police on the streets, building more hospitals and yes, we'll have 50,000 nurses more by the end of the decade and 44 hospitals by the end of... 50 thousand by the end of this Parliament, I should say, 40 new hospitals by the end of the decade.

Putting record funding into our schools and teacher pay, giving everyone who achieves a lifetime skills guarantee so they can continue to improve throughout their lives.

Three new high-speed rail lines, three, including the North Central Railway, colossal programs proud of the routes from the pen lines to drive the rollout of gigabit broadband over the past three years, I am proud to say, since you were kind enough to pick me, from 7 percent of our country's premises not having gigabit broadband to 70 percent today.

And of course we provide the short-term and long-term solutions to our energy needs, and not just by using more of our domestic hydrocarbons, but by going to 50 gigawatts of wind power by 2030 - that's half of this country's needs for electricity from the sea only wind.

A new nuclear reactor every year and seeing what's happening in this country the changes that are happening, that's why private sector investment is flooding in and more private sector more venture capital investment than China itself.

More billion pound tech companies spring up here in the UK than in France, Germany and Israel combined.

And as a result, unemployment, as I leave office, unemployment at low levels not seen since I was about 10 years old and jumping on an ironing board, my friends.

On the subject of jumping into a future career - let me say that I am now like one of those booster rockets that has served its purpose and will now gently reenter the atmosphere and splash invisibly into a far corner and dark Pacific.

And like Cincinnatus, I am returning to my plough.

And I will offer this government nothing but the most ardent support.

I'll tell you why.

This is a difficult time for the economy.

This is a difficult time for families up and down the country.

We can and will get through it, we will come out stronger on the other side.

But I say to my fellow Conservatives, it's time for politics to end people.

It's time for us all to get behind Liz Truss and her team and her program and deliver for the people of this country because that's what the people of this country want.

This is what they need.

And that's what they deserve.

I am proud to have fulfilled the promises I made to my party when you did well enough to elect me, winning the largest majority since 1987.

Most votes since 1979.

Delivering Brexit, delivering our manifesto committees, including, by the way, including social care, reforming social care, helping people up and down the country, making sure Britain is back on its feet in the world.

Speaking with clarity and authority from Ukraine to the orca pact with America and Australia, because we are one and all the United Kingdom, whose diplomatic security services and armed forces are so admired globally.

And by the way, as I'm leaving, I believe that our union is so strong that those who want to tear it apart will keep trying, but they will never, ever succeed.

Thanks to everyone from me in this building.

Thank you to everyone in the government.

And thank you to everyone who has helped take care of me and my family over the past three years, including Dilyn the dog, and I just tell my party if Dilyn and Larry can put their occasional hardships behind them, and as well as the Conservatory Party.

Most of all, thank you to you, the British people, the voters for giving me the opportunity to serve all of you who worked so tirelessly together, to be Covid to put us where we are today.

Together we have laid the foundations that will stand the test of time, whether by taking back control of our laws or by putting in place the vital new infrastructure, the strong solid masonry upon which we will continue to build together paving the way for prosperity now and for the future. generations.

And I will support this trust and the new government every step of the way.

Thank you all very much. Thank you. Goodbye. Thank you.
