Izz al-Din al-Haddad

Izz al-Din al-Haddad (or Ezz al-Din al-Haddad), also known as “Abu Suhaib,” is today one of the most controversial but important figures within Hamas. For decades, he has stayed out of the public eye, building a reputation as an enigmatic and invisible military commander.

This minimal public presence and his low profile have earned him nicknames such as “The Ghost” or “The Shadow of al-Qassam.” The deliberate choice to operate in the shadows, yet be deeply involved in Hamas’s command structures, has turned him into an almost mythical figure in the organization’s collective imagination.

From the front lines to the top

His career began at the lowest levels of the military hierarchy. Over time, he rose to command positions in companies, battalions, and later brigades. A key moment came in 2021, when he was appointed commander of the Gaza City Brigade.

At the time, Hamas was struggling to rebuild its fighting forces, and al-Haddad's command was considered essential to maintaining internal cohesion. After the targeted assassination of Ahmad al-Ghadour in November 2023, he also took control of the northern Gaza Strip, extending his authority to one of the most sensitive areas of confrontation with Israel.

In 2025, after a series of successful Israeli attacks that destroyed Hamas' hardline leadership, including Yahya Sinwari – al-Haddad emerged as Hamas's main military leader in Gaza.

Role on October 7

According to Israeli and Western estimates, al-Haddad was one of the main architects of the October 7, 2023 attack, which Hamas called the “Al-Aqsa Cataclysm.” This operation had the main aim of kidnapping hostages and transferring them to Gaza, a strategy that served as leverage.

It was this plan, as well as the method of selecting participants in the operation, that gave al-Haddad an increased reputation within Hamas, increasing his political and military weight in the enclave.

Since then, he has played a key role in prisoner management, both through direct supervision and through executive orders.

Shadow Commander

Al-Haddad's most notable skill is undoubtedly his ability to remain invisible. This trait is said to have been inherited from Sinwari, whom he succeeded after the latter's death by an Israeli unit in Rafah in October 2024.

He constantly changes his appearance, moves in complete secrecy, and follows very strict security regulations. This has allowed him to escape at least six assassination attempts by Israel. In addition, he is fluent in Hebrew, a skill that makes him valuable in both interrogations and psychological operations on prisoners.

Israeli security services consider him one of their most important targets and have placed a substantial reward for information leading to his capture. The official amount is unknown, but it is reported to be close to $1 million, with $750,000 unofficially confirmed by Israeli intelligence circles.

Hamas' "key man"

After heavy losses in the leadership structure, Hamas is trying to function more collectively. In this context, al-Haddad has taken on the role of "key figure" in Gaza. He controls military operations and has a direct influence on the negotiation process with international mediators.

His reputation as a steadfast and uncompromising leader, especially regarding any solution that would disband the al-Qassam Brigades, has made him a central figure, not only in the war on the ground, but also in discussions about the future of the Gaza Strip.

The future of "Ghost"

The main question today is whether al-Haddad will be able to convert his battlefield successes into political capital. On the one hand, he faces enormous pressure from the civilian population, which is experiencing severe humanitarian consequences. On the other, the reconstruction of Hamas as a military and political force depends almost entirely on his organizational capacity.

If he chooses the path of escalation and complete disintegration, Gaza risks remaining mired in a grueling war with an uncertain future. If, on the contrary, he accepts tactical concessions, he will do so only if he ensures that Hamas survives as a military and political structure.

At this moment, he holds in his hands the fate of the American Peace Plan, handed over to Hamas last Monday. Essentially, it is in his hands to decide whether the death of Palestinian civilians will continue or the political and military extinction of Hamas itself, which he has served for decades.
