Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reminded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the retaking of Jerusalem through a post on social media, drawing a parallel with the situation that exists today following the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

Erdogan commemorated the 838th anniversary of the conquest of Jerusalem with a post specifically referring to Sultan Saladin (Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi).

"On the 838th anniversary of the capture of Jerusalem, I respectfully remember the second conqueror of this holy city, Salahuddin Ayyubi, and his heroic soldiers. We will continue to fight with determination and perseverance for Jerusalem, which was entrusted to us by our Prophet and the prophets who came before him," Erdogan wrote.

Jerusalem fell on 2 October 1187 to the Sultan of Egypt and Syria, Saladin, after a 12-day siege. The decisive Battle of Hattin was fought in 1187 between the Crusaders of Guy of Lusignan and the Muslim Ayyubids of Saladin.

This resulted in a major defeat for the Crusaders, which led to the dissolution of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and later in 1189, to the Third Crusade.
