Russian President Vladimir Putin has escalated his rhetoric against the West, declaring that Russia is now at virtual war with all NATO countries and warning that any provocation from Europe will bring a swift response from Moscow.
In his speech at the Valdai Discussion Club Forum in Sochi, Putin rejected any claims that Russia intends to attack any NATO member country, but stressed that the alliance is directly participating in the conflict in Ukraine.
"We are fighting. We are producing military equipment. If someone still wants to compete with us in the military sphere, as we say, let them try. Russia's countermeasures will not be long in coming," Putin said.
Putin further added that a special center has been created in Europe to support Ukraine's armed forces, but according to him, Russia is at very advanced levels and has the most capable army in the world.
President Putin also responded to White House chief of staff Donald Trump's claims that Russia was a "paper tiger."
"If we are a paper tiger, then what is NATO itself?" Putin retorted.
The Russian leader reiterated the position that Moscow has a Ministry of Defense, not War, asserting that its purpose is always defensive and has no hostile intentions towards third countries.
Putin then commented on Trump's plan for peace and governance after the war in Gaza, saying that "there may be reasons for optimism." "I think there may be light at the end of the tunnel," he said. "Russia is ready to support President Trump's plan to end the war in Gaza, but only if it leads to the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel," Putin said.
"We are in contact with Hamas, it is important that the plan is also supported by Hamas. The main issue is what the Palestinians, including Hamas, think about this," the Russian president said at another point, expressing the view that " it would be better " for Mahmoud Abbas' Palestinian Authority to take over the management of the situation in Gaza.
The killing of Charlie Kirk last month in the United States was “disgusting ” and proves that there is a deep divide in American society, the Russian president said elsewhere. Putin then expressed his condolences to Kirk’s family and loved ones. “We sympathize with him primarily because he defended traditional values,” he stressed.
Regarding European threats to hit the Russian economy, Putin said he will take appropriate steps.
"It's impossible, but if we imagine it, excluding Russian producers and traders, who supply a significant portion of the world's oil, if this were to happen, prices would rise significantly, everything would immediately exceed $100," Putin said.
These harsh statements come at a key time, as the Trump administration is trying to find new tactics to end the conflict in Ukraine, after months of unsuccessful diplomacy.
