The scandal of former FBI agent Charles McGonigal, who is accused of collaborating with a Russian oligarch, continues to echo in the international media.

Even the prestigious French daily "Le Monde" has reported on the scandal involving the former senior FBI official, Charles McGonigal.

'Le Monde' writes how a senior FBI official broke US sanctions and cooperated with a Russian billionaire, while stating at the top of the article that "Charles McGonigal's greed was also his downfall"

"The level of sensitive information that McGonigal had access to and the suspicions about him in two separate investigations has given his journey to this situation an extraordinary dimension," the article reads.

The newspaper also quoted the deputy director of the FBI office in New York, Michael Driscoll, who spoke about how Russian oligarchs such as Oleg Deripaska carry out global malign influence on behalf of the Kremlin and are linked to acts of bribery, extortion and violence.

Deripaska has been on the list of Russians under US sanctions since 2018.

Special Agent McGonigal, 54, worked for the FBI between 1996 and 2018. For the past two years, he was in charge of the counterintelligence division in the New York office. In this capacity, he "supervised and participated in investigations of Russian oligarchs, including billionaire Deripaska."

Meanwhile, according to the indictment, the former FBI official turns out to have received an amount of 225 thousand dollars from the Albanian-American Agron Neza. It was McGonigal himself who, in August and then September of 2017, had asked Neza if he could provide him with a sum of money, which the latter gave him over the course of the autumn of that year in three different episodes.

But in addition to Neza, the indictment also shows other connections of the former FBI official with other personalities from Albania, where he made several visits, during which he held meetings with Prime Minister Rama. Together they met later in New York. " My interest has been to exchange conversations and opinions regarding those areas, of course he was a high-level expert, crime, corruption, then America, the Balkans, Albania, no other kind of relationship, " Prime Minister Edi Rama declared on Wednesday evening.

Speaking to journalists after a working meeting at the headquarters of the Socialist Party, Rama declared that "in the final indictment there is absolutely nothing related to me and the government of the Republic of Albania, except for the fact that we met here and there. American justice has fully investigated and charged the person with conflict of interest for a debt taken by his Albanian-American friend from Tropoja, who live together in New York.
