University professor Xavier Crettiez admits that he does not know the real names of many students who take his course.
This is unheard of in the academic world, but the professor's job is not like that of an ordinary university professor, as he contributes to the training of France's spies.
The university campus is surrounded by busy, monotonous streets and large, intimidating metal gates, creating an imposing atmosphere, an ideal environment for training spies.
What sets it apart from other universities is the unique degree it offers, which brings together young students as well as active members of the French intelligence services, usually between the ages of 35 and 50.
The program is called “Diplôme sur le Renseignement et les Menaces Globales,” which translates as “Diploma in Intelligence and Global Threats,” and was developed by the university in collaboration with the Academie du Renseignement, the educational arm of the French intelligence services.
Training young spies for the French government
After the 2015 attacks in Paris, the country's government launched a major recruitment campaign for French intelligence services.

She asked Sciences Po, one of France's top universities, to create a new curriculum to train potential new spies and provide ongoing training for existing agents.
Large French companies have also shown interest, both in enrolling their security personnel in the program and in hiring many of the younger graduates.
The diploma program requires 120 hours of study over four months. For external students – spies and those on internships with companies – the cost is around 5,000 euros.
The main goal of the program is to train potential spies to identify and deal with threats. Key topics include the economics of organized crime, business intelligence gathering, and political violence.
One student pointed out that “in order to attend one of the courses and speak to the students, I first had to pass a security check by the French security services.”
“I provide consulting services throughout West Africa and I took the course so that I could provide risk assessments to my clients there,” said a 40-year-old student who is an investment banker.
Major expansion of French intelligence services
According to Professor Crettiez, who teaches political radicalization, there has been an expansion of French intelligence services in recent years. There are now around 20,000 agents in what he calls the “inner circle.”
