Death toll from Hong Kong fire rises to 94

The death toll from Hong Kong's biggest fire in decades has risen to at least 94, as authorities announced the completion of firefighting operations.

The families of dozens of people who are considered missing after the fire are searching for their relatives in the city's hospitals.

Flames spread rapidly through the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex in Tai Po district on Wednesday afternoon, spreading across eight high-rise buildings.

After more than 40 hours of burning, the fire was "mostly extinguished" at 10:18 a.m. local time on November 28, firefighters announced, saying they had completed operations.

Authorities in Hong Kong are investigating what caused the fire, including examining the bamboo scaffolding and plastic netting that wrapped the complex as part of a major renovation.

Many people continue to be considered missing, although the exact number of missing is unknown as the data has not been updated since Thursday morning.

On Friday, authorities said more than 50 people remained hospitalized, with 12 in critical condition and 28 in serious condition.

This was the deadliest fire in Hong Kong since 1948, when an explosion, followed by a fire, killed at least 135 people.

Hong Kong's anti-corruption body said on Thursday it had launched an investigation into renovation work at the apartment complex, hours after police announced they had arrested three people on suspicion of negligently leaving foam insulation materials at the site of the fire.

Among the 94 victims is a firefighter and two Indonesian workers.

The Hong Kong government announced a fund of 38.5 million US dollars to help fire victims.

City authorities said they have opened nine shelters and are organizing temporary accommodation for residents who have lost their homes.

Due to the fire, activities for the legislative elections to be held in Hong Kong on December 7 have been suspended./ REL
