A wide-ranging anti-corruption operation has rocked Kosovo, with the Economic Crimes Police, under the direction of the Prizren Prosecution, arresting dozens of people in several cities across the country on suspicion of massive financial misappropriation, document forgery and abuse of economic authorizations. The operation, which extends from Pristina to Prizren, Peja, Ferizaj, Gjilan and beyond, has targeted over 40 people.
At the center of the investigation is the former executive director of the Kosovo Insurance Bureau (BKS), Sami Mazreku, arrested on serious suspicions of unjustified payments of over 1 million euros during 2022–2023.
According to the Sinjali newspaper, some of the other arrested are: Valon Berisha, former director of finance at BKS, and Valon Duraj, Naser Biri, former owner of Parts Center.
According to the findings of the Internal Audit of the Kosovo Bank, 166 payments were made outside of any legal procedure, without police reports, without commission decisions and without evidence in the official claims system.
The audit report classifies these expenditures as "High Risk", raising suspicions of financial abuse and money laundering.
The funds are suspected to have been distributed to 43 individuals and one legal entity, without any official claim for damages, while double compensation and artificial inflated damage values are also documented.
The criminal investigation has expanded significantly and Mazreku's arrest is seen as the culmination of a chain of serious violations within the BKS, an institution that is already facing one of the biggest financial scandals in recent years.
Authorities warn that the action continues, while new developments and further arrests are expected.
