A serious incident occurred today in Minneapolis, USA, where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot a 37-year-old woman.
The circumstances of the woman's murder are still unclear.
The US Department of Homeland Security said the woman tried to run over ICE officers with her car.
A video of the incident was released by the New York Post and is making the rounds on social media. It shows ICE agents approaching a Honda Pilot and ordering the driver out of the vehicle after blocking his path. One of the agents tries to open the door.
The driver initially tries to back up and then tries to move forward, but another agent has gotten ahead of her. The agent avoids the car, turns around and shoots at the driver.
Her car then crashes into a white vehicle parked nearby on the side of the road. After the shooting, a woman screams repeatedly: “No! No! What the hell…? What the hell… did you do? You are fucking criminals!”
According to Police Chief Brian O'Hara, the woman was in her car blocking traffic on Portland Street. A federal officer approached her, but "she attempted to drive away."
He said at least two shots were fired. The investigation is being conducted by the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation, he added.
Mayor Jacob Frey told reporters he was "appalled" by such actions by ICE officers in the city.
“They are destroying families, they are causing chaos on our streets,” he added. He said an investigation is needed, but he is not sure how justice will be served. He added that in his opinion, the person who was killed was not trying to “hit anyone.”
The mayor accused federal authorities of “trying to portray this as an act of self-defense,” adding that he had seen video of the incident. “This was an agent who used his power recklessly, causing someone’s death,” he said.
Mayor Frey called for unity and urged citizens not to be provoked by the actions of the Trump administration. He stressed that the presence of ICE agents is causing chaos and loss of life and called on citizens to show “bravery, love and compassion.”
The Trump administration has sent 2,000 additional federal agents to Minneapolis in recent weeks in response to allegations of welfare fraud in the state. The deployment, which began Sunday, is one of the largest of Department of Homeland Security personnel to a U.S. city in recent years.
