René Nicole MacLean Good

The woman who was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on Wednesday in Minneapolis was René Nicole MacLean Good , a 37-year-old mother of three who had recently moved to the city.

According to the Associated Press, Good was a US citizen, born in Colorado, and does not appear to have ever had criminal charges.

Her file only includes one fine for violating traffic rules.

On her social media accounts, MacLean Good described herself as a " poet, writer, wife, and mother ."

In recent posts, she wrote that she was "getting to know Minneapolis," while on her Instagram profile she had added the rainbow flag emoji.

Her Pinterest profile picture showed her smiling and holding a small child next to her page, while her posts focused mainly on the topics of tattoos, hair styling, and home decor.

Her ex-husband, who asked to remain anonymous for the children's safety reasons, said Good had just dropped their 6-year-old son off at school on Wednesday and was returning home with her current partner.

Along the way, they encountered a group of ICE agents on a snow-covered street in Minneapolis, the city where the couple had moved last year from Kansas City, Missouri.

Videos filmed by bystanders, which are circulating widely online, show an ICE agent approaching Good's car, asking him to open the door and grabbing the handle.

As the vehicle begins to move, another ICE agent, who was in front of the car, draws his gun and shoots at least twice from very close range.

In another video, recorded after the shooting, a woman is seen sitting next to the vehicle, crying and screaming: "This is my wife, I don't know what to do!"

Trump administration officials have recently portrayed MacLean Good as a troublemaker, claiming she attempted to ram her vehicle into federal officers. During a press conference Wednesday night, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the victim had been “watching them and obstructing their work all day.”

She added that the ICE agent who opened fire was hit in June by a vehicle that "pulled him for several meters."

The 37-year-old's ex-husband, however, emphasizes that she was not an activist and that he had never seen her participate in protests of any kind.

He described Good as a devoted Christian who had participated in religious missions in Northern Ireland in her youth.

She loved singing, had been part of a choir in high school, and had studied vocal performance at university.

MacLean Good studied creative writing at Old Dominion University in Virginia and won an award in 2020 for one of her works, according to a post on the university's English department Facebook page. She also hosted a podcast with her second husband, who died in 2023.

She had a daughter and a son from her first marriage, now 15 and 12 years old respectively, while the 6-year-old son was from her second marriage.

According to her ex-husband, in recent years Good had focused primarily on raising her children, although she had previously worked as a dental assistant and as an employee at a credit union.

Her mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that the family was informed of her death late Wednesday morning.

"René was one of the best people I've ever known ," Ganger told the newspaper. "She was incredibly compassionate. She cared for people her whole life. She was full of love, forgiveness and kindness. She was an extraordinary person."
