The largest statue of the Virgin Mary in Europe is located in Poland. The small village of Konotopie hopes to welcome pilgrims. But a billionaire's charitable gesture is unlikely to stop the process of secularization.

In the idyllic, flat rural landscape, between fields of grain, meadows and a lake, it rises towards the sky. Thanks to it, the hitherto completely unknown village of Konotopie, with a population of 120, located in north-central Poland, 160 kilometers northwest of the capital Warsaw, has been in the spotlight for weeks.

The entire structure, clearly visible from afar, stands more than 55 meters tall. The snow-white statue is 40.6 meters high and stands on a 15-meter-high crown-shaped pedestal, which will serve as a viewing platform. The monument dwarfs the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, which, including the pedestal, is 38 meters high.

Thousands of visitors – pilgrims and spectators – have gathered there for months. Opinions on the importance of this project are deeply divided in Poland.

“A nightmare. A zero with a tail. Instead of investing that money in useful projects, they have financed a giant mountain of concrete,” Newsweek quoted one critic as saying. “Wonderful, this Saint Mary. My utmost respect. Fantastic achievement,” said one devout visitor, according to the right-wing conservative weekly Sieci.

The donor of the statue of the Virgin Mary, 75-year-old Roman Karkosik, is originally from a neighboring village and is now one of the richest people in Poland. When, almost 40 years ago, unchecked capitalism replaced the socialist economy of scarcity, this technical college graduate tried his luck as a bartender. Later, he devoted himself to the scrap metal trade and the production of carbonated drinks, and was the first in Poland to engage in the production of plastic bottles.

Karkosik made a name for himself on the Warsaw Stock Exchange; some journalists compare his role for Poland to that of Warren Buffett on Wall Street.

His fortune is estimated at 1.9 billion zlotys, equivalent to about 442 million euros. He is ranked 44th on the list of the richest Poles by Wprost magazine. The businessman lives in an 18th-century castle in the village of Kikol, just two kilometers from Konotopie.

Karkosik and his wife, Grazyna, avoid public appearances and contact with the media. The cost of the sculpture also remains a secret. The media speculate that the work may have cost 100 million zlotys.

After World War II, the anti-communist opposition and the Catholic Church worked together, despite their differences of opinion, against the communist dictatorship. Churches became refuges for dissidents persecuted by the regime, and several priests were killed by the secret services. Pope John Paul II, of Polish origin, also played an important role in the fight against the dictatorship.

However, since the transition to democracy in 1989, the Catholic Church in Poland has been in crisis, as it has throughout Europe.

According to a survey by the Polish polling institute IBRIS in September 2025, only 35 percent of Poles trust the church; in 2016, the figure was still 58 percent. Disagreement with the church increased from 24 percent to 47 percent.

The number of annual priestly ordinations in Poland fell below 200 again in 2026, for the first time since 2000. The number of believers is also steadily decreasing, especially among young people. Not even a giant Virgin Mary can stop this trend./ DW
