Is he dead? Iranian media publishes rare footage of Mojtaba Khamenei

Iranian state media has released an archive video of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, claiming it was made before he took the country's highest office.

In the video, Khamenei is seen during the meeting, speaking to those present.

The video was released on Monday, August 24, and its release attracted attention because Khamenei has not appeared in public since his appointment as supreme leader in March.

Mojtaba Khamenei took office after the death of his father, Iran's former supreme leader, who was killed on February 28, the first day of US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

According to senior Iranian sources, Mojtaba Khamenei was injured in that attack, including serious facial injuries.

Since his withdrawal from the public eye, Iranian state media has published several written statements attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei.

Among them was a message in which he promised revenge for the deaths of his father and predecessor, as well as announcements of the appointment of several senior officials in the Revolutionary Guard and Iran's armed forces.

Iranian authorities have not released detailed information about his health nor have they explained why he has not appeared in public since taking office.

The release of the archival footage comes at a time when international attention has grown on the state of the Iranian leadership.
