6.0 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan, over 250 dead and hundreds injured

More than 250 people have been killed and hundreds more injured after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan's eastern region on Sunday, according to state media.

Rescue teams have been mobilized in several districts of the mountainous area near the border with Pakistan, but there are fears the death toll could rise further. Efforts to reach more isolated communities have been hampered by landslides, the Taliban's state-run Bakhtar News Agency (BNA) reported.

The quake struck shortly before midnight, about 27 kilometers northeast of the city of Jalalabad (population about 200,000) in Nangarhar province, at a shallow depth of just 8 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). On Monday, local officials said at least 250 people had been killed and more than 500 injured in several districts of the mountainous northeastern province of Kunar, BNA reported.

"The number of casualties and injuries is high, but as the area is difficult to reach, our teams are still on the ground," Health Ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman said in a statement to Reuters.

According to the USGS, nearly half a million people felt the shaking as strong or very strong, which can cause significant damage to poorly constructed buildings.

Ahmad Zameer, 41, a resident of Kabul, told CNN that the earthquake was strong and shook his neighborhood, more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the epicenter. He added that all the residents of nearby buildings rushed out into the streets for fear of being trapped inside. “Unfortunately, tonight’s earthquake has caused casualties and material damage in some of our eastern provinces,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid wrote on Twitter.

"Currently, local officials and residents are making every effort to rescue the affected people. Support teams from the capital and neighboring provinces are also on the way. All possible resources will be used for rescue and relief," he added.

Tremors were also felt in several cities in neighboring Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The region was hit by at least five aftershocks, the strongest measuring 5.2, in the hours following the main quake, according to the USGS.

The USGS PAGER system issued an orange alert, which predicts human and economic losses following earthquakes.

"There is a possibility of multiple casualties and the disaster could be widespread. Past events with this alert level have required responses on a regional or national scale," the report notes.

Afghanistan has a long history of earthquakes, many of which occur in the Hindu Kush mountain range that borders Pakistan. In October 2023, more than 2,000 people died after a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan — one of the deadliest in the country in recent years.
