The leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) Alice Weidel stated during a conversation with American billionaire Elon Musk that Adolf Hitler was a communist.
Weidel spoke with Elon Musk, a close aide to new US President Donald Trump, on the billionaire's X platform, formerly Twitter. Musk has openly supported the AfD in the German elections, which German security services suspect of right-wing extremism. AfD branches are classified as extremist in several countries.
The claim that Hitler was a communist is historically completely incorrect, said Andreas Wirsching, director of the Munich Institute for Contemporary History, the German News Service reports.
Such claims, he added, appear from time to time among extremists. Weidel's statement, he said, is cynical towards the victims of the Nazi regime, politically misleading and insidious.
“Under Hitler’s responsibility, not only tens of thousands of communists were persecuted, imprisoned in concentration camps and murdered, but also countless social democrats and trade unionists,” Wirsching noted. He added that since 1919, Hitler had been a radical anti-Semitic and nationalist opponent.
"The National Socialists, as the name suggests, were socialists," Wiedel said in an interview with Musk. "Hitler was a communist and considered himself a socialist."
Wiedel justified her accusations by claiming that Hitler nationalized businesses and imposed high taxes. Wiersching said that this was also incorrect. Private enterprises were not nationalized, but were put at the service of the war economy through various measures.
“Many private German companies made huge profits during the Nazi regime and the war economy,” the historian explained. Musk reiterated his support for the AfD during the conversation. “Only the AfD can save Germany,” he repeated his December statement.
He added that if people are unhappy with the situation in their country, they should vote for change.
"Otherwise, it will be much, much worse in Germany," Musk said.
In November, Musk called current Social Democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz a fool.
